6th Annual Kiptopeke Sea Kayaking Symposium
September 23-25, 2016
Virginia Barrier Islands, Kiptopeke, VA
Cost: $425 (includes all classes, 3 nights room and 1 dinner)
The 2015 symposium recently concluded and it was a blast in spite of (because of ?) 15- 25 knot winds for all three days! Over 60 particpants and instructors took part in over 30 classes designed for paddlers of all skill levels.
Make sure that next year you join us for three great days of sea kayak training, events and comaraderie. There will be 10 rough water and calm water classes to choose from each day, with courses for all skill levels. All the old favorites will be back (e.g. Wreckage in the Wave Train), along with several new courses. The 2016 courses will be announced in May but you can view the 2015 course descriptions by clicking on the PDF button in the picture on the right side of this page.
You'll be able to register in May 2016 by clicking here.
Coaches: Jen Kleck, Tom Noffsinger, Ed Schiller, Chris Raab, Ken Fandetti, Brian Blankinship, Paula Hubbard, Tom Malone, Jennifer Miller, Rick Wiebush.
Bonus Course: BCU 4* Training with Jen Kleck; Sept 21-22
Requires separate registration and fees. See course descriptions.
Housing. As always, we will all be staying in the fantastic lodges at Kiptopeke State Park. This is one of the things that makes the symposium so special. Instead of everyone going their individual ways after classes, they come back to the lodges where they can socialize, share meals and make new friends with paddlers from all over the East Coast.

(What I liked best was) the quality of the instruction and making a few seakayaking friends to go paddling with in the future. I really enjoyed the camaraderie encouraged by staying in the lodges together and by meeting challenges together, etc. I was so glad there were paddlers of all levels. EVERYONE WAS SO FRIENDLY!
I really liked the way the various activities built on each other. Each instructor approached the same topics differently, with different emphasis and different practice activities. We learned how to turn and maneuver in the wind, which has always been tough for me.
The entire symposium was perfect for me, since I needed the time and space to get to know my boat, and to improve skills before I tackle rougher water and longer distances. I’m beginning to build a little confidence and am so happy to feel that I can do this! On the other hand, you offered more challenging conditions for other paddlers. And of course, I LOVED the surfing, and would have liked to have had more time to play.
Your symposium was perfect the way it was. Count me in for next year. My only regret is that I didn’t discover this a couple years ago.
My wife and I truly enjoyed all of our classes, the wonderful new group of people we met, and of course the location. We are already planning on next year so at this point you can count us in.
Where do I start? Everything was great, but if forced to pick my favorites, a) the 3* Training with Jen Kleck, and b) the camaraderie of the participants – this is unique to Kiptopeke. There were so many courses I wanted to take (and need to take) but time was limited. I don’t know if there is a demand for novice level courses – but some spouses/SOs may want to come, but might feel intimidated by the level of instruction.
